Real development for our people

We want energy and economic investment here that our communities benefit from directly. We want jobs and royalties here, rather than seeing the profits of our natural resources going to some American corporate executives. Renewables can power our communities in many ways — with electricity, jobs, and investments in our future.

Battery storage can provide everything we need

We already have a growing renewable energy industry that supplies a significant portion of electricity for Atlantic provinces, and the possibility of offshore wind development is truly incredible. Renewable electricity generation keeps getting cheaper and cheaper, while gas-fueled electricity has our power bills climbing higher and higher.

  • The new gas plants proposed for New Brunswick and PEI are not cost effective. In PEI, battery storage would meet the energy needs and cost 50% less than a new diesel plant.

  • In PEI, proponent ProEnergy estimates the 100MW diesel plant would cost $334 million, with a potential to run almost $100m over budget.​ A100MW battery storage facility could be installed at a total project cost of $184M.

Atlantic Canada is special — we are known around the world for the beauty of our landscapes and the warmth of our culture. Whole industries are built around this beauty and connection, like tourism, arts and culture.

 

Over 130,000 of us work in arts, culture, and tourism industries, which bring almost $13 billion into our communities across the four Atlantic provinces.

Putting a gas plant at the top of the Bay of Fundy, or a diesel plant in Charlottetown, or an LNG plant to the Avalon peninsula, put tourism, arts, culture, and wildlife at risk. We owe it to ourselves and those who come after us to invest in what’s working, and leave them with reliable industries and a good quality of life.​

Air, water and health

Any kind of gas infrastructure — gas plants, fracking or LNG production — brings pollution to the air and water nearby. The chemicals released when gas is fracked or burned in a gas plant get into the surrounding air and water, and harm communities and wildlife living nearby. It also can use huge amounts of freshwater, taking it out of our rivers and making it unusable.
